As of early 2026, the Franz Josef Glacier continues to experience significant retreat, with the terminal face located roughly 3,000 meters from the main viewpoint, rendering it impossible to touch from the valley floor walk. The glacier remains a dynamic, rapidly retreating feature of the Southern Alps, heavily affected by ongoing ice loss, with access largely restricted to aerial tours for close-up viewing.
